The third week of the 2010 NRL Finals produced a couple of shocking results as the final two teams were named for the 2010 NRL Grand Final. Things kicked off with a fantastic showdown between the Gold Coast Titans and the Sydney Roosters.
The Roosters made history by storming into the 2010 NRL Grand Finals with a stunning upset of the Gold Coast Titans. The first half of the match was a closely fought battle as the two teams went into the half with the Roosters up 12-6 thanks to a pair of tries from Right Winger Sam Perrett. Though, the Roosters weren’t finished by any means as they returned with their sights firmly set on a place in the upcoming Grand Final match.
Daniel Conn took advantage of a lucky bounce to score a crucial try and put the team up 18-6. This lead was further extended at the 62nd minute when Braith Anasta took a try of his own to not only put the team in the Grand Final, but also sealed their place in NRL history. The Sydney Roosters became the first squad to go from Wooden Spooners to Grand Final contenders in more than 70 years.
While the win comes as fantastic news for the Roosters, key player Todd Carney will be waiting with baited breath to find out if he can appear in the upcoming Grand Final match. Carney was put on report for a high tackle against Scott Prince. If he cops more than 100 penalty points, he will miss the Grand Final match, which will be a tough blow for the Sydney team.
The NRL Week 3 Final action continued on Saturday with a nail-biting match between the St George Dragons and the Wests Tigers. It was nearly a repeat of 2005’s Preliminary Final as the Tigers looked set to take the upset.
After hitting the grounds hard in the first half, the Tigers were up 12-6 at the half. Seeing their Premiership hopes slipping away, the Dragons rallied to tie the score up at 12-12 at the 50th minute. Jamie Soward was certainly the hero of the game after taking a field goal from 33 metres out at the 74th minute to put the score at 13-12 in favour of the Dragons. St George was then able to hold off the Tigers through the closing minutes to take the win and the second place in the 2010 NRL Grand Finals.
