NRL Finals Week 2 Results

September 22nd, 2010

The second week of the 2010 NRL Finals has wrapped up in spectacular fashion. The four teams provided fans and punters plenty of excitement as they battled it out for a chance to keep their NRL Grand Finals hopes alive for one more week.

The Canberra Raiders and Wests Tigers started things off with a gritty fight to the last minute. In the end, the Tigers were able to overcome their underdog status and take a very close 26-24 victory over the home team. Led by an inspirational performance from Benji Marshall, the Tigers took the lead right from the start, going into the half break with a six-point lead.

Though the Raiders were able to put together a rally late in the game, thanks to a missed opportunity for centre Jarrod Croker that would have sent the game into golden point, the Tigers were able to just hold onto their lead for the win. Marshall scored three of the team’s four tries.

The Sydney Roosters and the Penrith Panthers locked in battle on Saturday night. It seemed it was anyone’s game going into this one, but the Roosters soon proved why they remain in contention for a chance at the 2010 NRL Grand Final. The Sydney team immediately grabbed the upper hand, going up 12-0 at the end of the first half.

The Panthers were plagued with injury throughout the game, which ultimately cost the thinned out team dearly. They were down Trent Waterhouse and Frank Pritchard going into the match, and lost Michael Jennings and Luke Lewis within the first half an hour. Nevertheless, the team was able to rally late in the game that made a comeback almost seem possible. This was quickly shut down as the Roosters’ Todd Carney and Anthony Minichiello scored an amazing two tries in three minutes, securing the 34-12 victory.

So, we’re one step closer to the highly anticipated NRL Grand Final. There’s just one week of competition left in which the two remaining teams meet up with the well rested Gold Coast Titans and St George Dragons.
