AFL Finals Week 3 Preview

September 14th, 2010

These AFL Finals seem to be flying by as we are already looking to week 3. That’s the last elimination round until the much anticipated AFL Grand Final. We’ll see two more games of intense Aussies Rules football as these remaining teams battle it out for a place in the final two.

Friday night, September 17 will start things off with the Collingwood Magpies and Geelong Cats. Both of these teams are packed with talent and both are favourites to take out this year’s title. It’s going to be a can’t miss game to see which will advance and which will have to kiss their Grand Finals hopes goodbye.

Collingwood kicked off their AFL Finals bid with a massive win over the Western Bulldogs. Their victory earned them a week’s rest, which could turn out to be the difference between winning and losing. While it gave the team a chance to recuperate, it also could have cooled them down. Plenty are wondering if they’ll be able to jump right back into their top form, especially against a team like Geelong. The Cats have had non-stop action since these finals started. They had a slow start, but proved in last week’s game that they’re still major contenders to take the title.

These teams have quite an AFL Finals history that slightly favours the Cats. They just beat out the ‘Pies in the 2007 preliminary final, but followed it up with a thrashing in 2009’s match. Nevertheless, Collingwood are the 1.85 favourites going into this one.

Saturday, September 18 will see the St Kilda Saints taking on the Western Bulldogs. The Saints are heavy favourites and it’s no wonder as they’re not only coming in with a superior ladder position, but they should also be fully refreshed after a week of rest.

The Bulldogs have had a rough AFL Finals road thus far as they were clobbered in week 1 by the Magpies and just managed to oust the Sydney Swans in a 77-72 thriller. As they’re looking increasingly worn down, this very well could be the end for the Bulldogs this year. The Saints have extensive Finals experience as they’ve appeared in the preliminary final round three years in a row. They even beat out the Bulldogs in last year’s match to secure their place in the Grand Final. So, will history repeat itself? It looks likely if the odds are any indication.
