AFL Finals Week 2 Results

September 13th, 2010

It was another fantastic weekend of AFL Finals action as the second week of AFL Finals competition drew to a close. The Grand Final picture is that much clearer as two teams’ AFL Finals hopes have ended in this sudden death round. The Geelong Cats kicked things off with a huge win over the less experienced Fremantle Dockers.

Geelong kicked the game off with an eight goal first quarter, proving that they have what it takes to win their third flag in four years. The win was without a doubt a team effort as they dominated the younger Dockers in nearly every aspect of the game, but praise must be given to Jimmy Bartel and David Wojcinski as the two put on a couple of the most impressive performances of the night. The former racked up an amazing 35 touches en route to the 69-point clobbering of the now eliminated Fremantle Dockers. All of this comes without key defender Andrew Mackie, leaving the team still questioning if and when they will return Mackie to the line up.

Game two of the second week of these AFL Finals saw a very close game between the Western Bulldogs and the Sydney Swans. It seems that the Swans bad hoodoo when it comes to the MCG is still firmly intact, as they have now suffered their tenth loss in 11 games on the turf.

In a thriller that was decided by just five points, the Western Bulldogs were eventually able to oust the Swans to secure their position in the final four. While they put up a valiant effort, the Swans just weren’t able to put together an unstoppable play. Daniel Bradshaw bungled a couple of kicks and Ryan O’Keefe was obviously suffering from that groin injury, which resulted in a team that looked less like final four quality and more run down from two difficult back-to-back tests. Ah well, there’s always next year for the Swans.
