The AFL Finals is officially underway! Week one of the finals is complete and it didn’t come without a few upsets. In fact, the week was kicked off by a pretty surprising upset. Many had touted the Geelong Cats as the team to beat in this year’s finals. Even sportsbooks such as Ladbrokes.com.au had them listed as odds on favourites to take out the title. Though, their finals bid got off to a rocky start as the St Kilda Saints handed them an 83-79 loss. Their poor first half performance put the Cats in a tough position that even a second half rally couldn’t get them out of. They’ll now go on to face a sudden death Semi Final match, which is not how the team had hoped to start things off.
Another shocking finish came from the Fremantle v Hawthorn match. Plenty had expected the Hawks to dominate in this game thanks to their abundant Finals experience. Though, it wasn’t to be, as the younger Docker squad didn’t look to be feeling any first finals appearance pressure. The team looked well-rested thanks to the controversial round 21 break for 11 top players. It looks like the decision more than paid off as they dominated throughout their first round finals match.
The Collingwood Magpies lived up to their Minor Premiership status as they killed the Western Bulldogs 124-62. In a match that never saw the Pies lose control, they were more talented, smarter, and more physical than the opposition. Of course, this is due in part to the six key starters that returned just in time for week 1. If the Magpies continue to play like this, a Premiership title looks to be in the cards.
The first round of the AFL Finals wrapped up with a very close game between the Sydney Swans and the Carlton Blues. The Swans were able to accumulate a four-point lead by the first half and, despite a second half rally from the Blues, Sydney was able to hold on to take the win. It was a thrilling finish to a round of very interesting competition.
