Round 23 will be another eight high-octane matches, kicking off with two matches this Friday the 13th. Let’s hope that bad luck doesn’t play a factor as quite a few teams battle it out for their spot in the Top 8.
The Brisbane Broncos will be kicking the round off by hosting the Parramatta Eels at Suncorp Stadium. While the Broncos are flying high with their continued improvement, it’s more of a desperate situation for the Eels who are facing a must win match. Coming into this game on the back of two consecutive losses, the Eels will now need to win their final four games in order to secure a position in the Top 8. Though, history isn’t on their side as they’ve only won three of their past 11 appearances at Suncorp.
Despite their lacklustre record in Broncos’ territory, the Eels aren’t letting the pressure get to them. The fact that veteran player and Brisbane captain Darren Lockyer will be out for at least two weeks due to a rib injury will certainly play in their favour. Plus, Parramatta captain Nathan Cayless should be feeling confident as he prepares to break the record for most games played as captain. This could boost the team’s morale as they head into what should be a rigorous battle.
The Broncos will see the return of Antonio Winterstein after a leg injury. This puts Matt Gillett back to the back row and Alex Glenn back into centres. Corey Parker will take over as captain with the absence of Lockyer, and as he is on his way to 300 NRL goals, expect some big plays from the stand-in skipper. Though they may be nursing their injuries, the Broncos are on a roll. They have their sights set on a Top 4 finish, and will likely pull out all the stops for a win at the home grounds.
