AFL Round 20 Preview

August 13th, 2010

Round 20 of the AFL home-and-away season kicks off tonight with Essendon hosting the number one Collingwood Magpies.

Will a little Friday the 13th bad luck knock the Magpies from their throne?  It doesn’t seem likely as they’re sure favourites to win this one.  They’ve been unstoppable this season with only three losses and one draw.  Plus, the ‘Pies are coming into this match after a satisfying victory over the Geelong Cats in Round 19.  Sitting six points ahead on the AFL ladder, a win against Essendon will go a long way in ensuring a Minor Premiership title for Collingwood.

Though Essendon was showing some promise late in the season with a couple of wins against North Melbourne and St Kilda, a big loss to Carlton in Round 19 brought them crashing back to earth.  They’re currently sitting on the 12th run of the ladder, and a spot in the Finals doesn’t seem likely.  Ladbrokes.com.au has the Bombers listed as $7.11 underdogs in their head-to-head odds.  Collingwood is sitting at $1.11.

While a win for Collingwood seems locked up, the future is a little more uncertain for the Fremantle Dockers and the Sydney Swans.  Both are vying for Top 8 positions, and while the Dockers’ prospects are looking promising, the Swans are teetering on the edge.

Fremantle is currently ranked fifth on the ladder.  A win in this game will cement this position for the Dockers and ensure an appearance in the Finals.  Though they’re in a great position to continue their season, they’ve been a bit of a mixed bag in recent rounds.  They’ve lost three of their last five matches, including a crushing loss to North Melbourne in Round 19.  On the other hand, the Swans had a big win over Hawthorn last week and will likely take this opportunity to help secure their place in the Finals.  At number seven, they’ll need to narrow the gap between themselves and their opponents.

Ladbrokes.com.au has Fremantle listed as the $1.61 favourites, thanks in big part to the game being at Subiaco Oval.  The Swans are listed at $2.37 and, with so much on the line, an upset wouldn’t be out of the question.
